Identification by DNA barcode of viable fungi captured in a teaching laboratory in West Virginia

Fungi are ubiquitous and their spores found in the air outside within built environment. We investigated fungal species present a teaching laboratory at Shepherd University. Airborne fungi were captured passively three sites on two different culture media. Viable isolated to pure then identified by DNA barcode using internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA. Twenty-four isolates order, family, genus, or species; most not resolved barcode. Captured belonged Helotiales (1 isolate), Pleosporales (2 isolates), Hypocreales Didymellaceae Cladosporiaceae (5 Aspergillaceae Sporocadaceae Peniophora Trichoderma Penicillium (4 Fusarium Myrmecridium isolate). Three as Xenoacrodontium juglandis. These results similar other studies investigating community environment, where Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus commonly genera.
